The turmoil in Iran?

The latest UN report in Iran shows that Iran is not working to reduce uranium enrichment activity, but it increases it. Worse yet, some parts of nuclear facilities are not even shown to investigators. I'm pretty sure that something as important as this should at least have its place on the news, if not the headline (I mean, the burning ship even went in there).

What exactly is de facto heterosexual or homosexual?

Just curious. Trau

Think they are referring to the status of unmarried homosexual couples spouse . Potatoswatter 21:44, March 11, 2007 (UTC)
What exactly is the de facto couple? Does this have anything to do with Italian law? People can not be considered a spouse unless they get official recognition like that? Trau
Search terms wiktionary: de facto . Potatoswatter 03:25, March 12, 2007 (UTC)
I know what de facto means. That does not apply to human relationships at all. Two people are couples or not. The de facto is in contrast to de jure, and does not seem to apply here. Trau
I admire your innocence, but... Potatoswatter 04:05, March 13, 2007 (UTC)
Actually, I see Trau points. A person can not become a de facto heterosexual or de homo de facto homosexual, although it is possible to have de facto de jure or de jure. relationship. Although commonly used in public conversations, de facto is a legal term and should not be used otherwise in encyclopedias. No court can determine that an individual is a certain sexuality under the law, although they may rule that the relationship of a particular partner is applicable in law. Therefore "de facto/de jure heterosexual/homosexual" would be a false distinction, although "de facto/de jure heterosexual/homosexual relationship " would not. - 81.5.170.199 02:14, March 14, 2007 (UTC)
What is what is said legally when no one comes to court. I forget what the article is now, but if a gay couple gets some rejected benefits for a single person, there may be a possibility for someone to be rejected and must prove their de facto status relationship. In other words, as you say, there is a de facto and de jure relationship. That's what I say, and what you say and not what Trau says. A de facto homosexual will be (probably married) a person convicted of perversion in some other part of the world. Potatoswatter 02:22, March 14, 2007 (UTC)
Oops, yes I understand what you mean. I will go with the original section header ("What is actually de facto heterosexual or homosexual?"), But when looking back, I see Trau then repeat the question to "What exactly is this de facto couple?" , which we both agree with, can be a fully legitimate relationship description. - 81.5.170.199 03:56, March 14, 2007 (UTC)
I do not know about Italian law but in NZ law, couples can be in a de facto relationship if they live together in a relationship like a two-year marriage or something like that. Most laws & amp; policies covering people in marriage and civil unions apply to such relationships as well (inheritance, recipients, taxes) Nil Einne 19:08, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Kematian Captain America

I added the death of Captain America to the Current Events portal and it was delegated with the claim that it has no international achievements, which I believe is unfounded because the story was posted on many news outlets including international ones, specifically CNN and their website, AP, Variety, and many others, but Marvel itself also publishes it all over the world. Spider-Man leak was recently included in the portal and although Cap may not be as popular, it is still internationally known who has never read comic books. This is equivalent to Superman's death in 1993 which received international coverage, although it was promoted much earlier. This short story will certainly circulate widely, but it is quite prominent an event to get inclusions.

Heck, I'm Canadian, and I'm posting this. This is of international interest, and I would like to see support for returning it to Recent Events on March 7, 2007. CyclopsScott 23:10, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

The user who deleted it successfully on my conversation page that my argument to include it is valid but also thinks of it as just some "comic book dead hero" big trouble 'which is a personal matter that obstructs objectivity. this is a noteworthy addition, and therefore I am returning the information to the main page, although it will cut it a bit because the article itself contains a lot of detail.CyclopsScott 00:08, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
I'm a bit frustrated because it's been deleted again, with the claim that the AP can not source. I also sourced Newsarama and CNN, but on my talk page the user also claimed the death of a fictitious character is not news. Contrary to Superman's death is news, but not death itself which is a story per se, but the fact that Marvel publishes it is news. I still hold the Spider-Man flip through and Superman's death as a forecast that should be worth including this. Neither the user who deleted it has responded here about their reasons for me either. CyclopsScott 03:20, March 8, 2007 (UTC)

It would be like if there were only four big ice cream companies and one of them decided to stop selling strawberries. Marvel is a large circulation comic book company and Captain America is an old and profitable franchise and is historically interesting as a character that embodies early American propaganda. peningkatan aktivitas = & gt; kategori?

Lately there are occasional days with the primary value of the whole screen. This becomes a bit complicated. Maybe we should introduce organizational template? We can name the comments for different categories of news, and the editor can delete comments when the first news appears.

Wikinews connects

I do not know if this has been discussed before, but should we link it to the appropriate Wikinews story? I have done this in Portal: Current events/UK and Ireland, connecting Wikinews like any other source but only when there are other sources as well. I do not see any harm in it if the Wikinews article is well written and refers to a more reliable source of journalism (ie, definitely not linked to one if it's purely original research). It might be better to link directly to other sources as well, as you have done - Qxz 04:30, March 14, 2007 (UTC)
Why does Wikinews need a source? This is a journalistic site with peer review. Potatoswatter 05:50, March 14, 2007 (UTC)
No. But since anyone can edit it, we can not use it as source , because it's not reliable. At best, we can use the article there as a tertiary source when citing a reliable primary or secondary source, which is the point I am trying to make - Qxz 15:42, March 14, 2007 (UTC)

Inclusion of Cho Seung-hui on recent death

Can someone justify, in terms of Wiki guidelines and policies, Cho's exclusion from the recent death column? Christopher Connor 13:40, April 19, 2007 (UTC)

I deleted the name, I do not know if anyone did it. I see some arguments against it:
  • Redundancy. The Virginia Tech massacre is already in place in some recent events, including the front page. Cho himself connected in most of them.
  • Simplicity. The latest Death column is quite clear for people whose deaths are not in prominent "events" - a list of obituaries. There may be little reason for duplication in almost all cases, but this does not seem like where there is a need. Do we assume people will not know about his death if it is excluded?
  • Justice. If we include Cho, we must include all the victims who have the article now (which includes some that are in AFD).
  • Precedent. If we do that, then we have to be with precedents including all the famous people who were killed, or who committed suicide, during important events. That's a lot of people.
I prefer anyone who wants inclusion to be forced to justify themselves, because is not that where the burden of proof is in the policy?
This seems a reasonable argument for me. I may also not be alone for suspecting that inclusion is a type of provocation, but I prefer to take the high road. People can respectfully disagree with this argument, but ignore intentions, I think this is a good excuse for exceptions. Until now this feature has survived, as far as I can determine, without any formal policy governing its use. I think it can continue to do so as long as it is not used in a way that is, intended or not, potentially disruptive. --Dhartung | Talk 18:04, April 19, 2007 (UTC)

This will be a lot of work, and there are some pages that contain content that may not be fully included in the history of current events and should be moved to normal article space. However. for consistency would be better in my opinion. --TheDJ (talk o contribs) 22:26, â € <â €

Cutty Sark

The words for Cutty Sark bit seem wrong

The Cutty Sark cutter burns on a dry pier at Greenwich in London where it is being renovated.

This made it sound like it had been moved to a dry dock for renovation. This is where the ship is kept at all times. So the words can change. Jimmmmmmmmm 12:35, May 21, 2007 (UTC)

I agree. I have changed the entry slightly to better reflect the importance of history, and remove the renovation part. people can read it from the article if they want it, it's too confusing to get in short. --TheDJ (talk o contribs) 13:25, May 21, 2007 (UTC)

News links for Irish elections

I have replaced the BBC news link because it really explains from an outside perspective as to what the background is. The RTÃÆ' â € ° story says little more than that there is an election taking place, because Irish media is under a moratorium/blackout on election analysis. zoney ? talk 11:55, May 24, 2007 (UTC)

How are News articles selected?

Simple Question... Who decides? I assume someone bieng pay for part of this wiki, and what is their motive for choosing one story above the other?

No, that's really just volunteers. It results in uneven coverage of news events.- gadfium 20:36, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Actually, WP: ITN/C is only for news items that appear on the front page. On this page , anyone can edit. Though others may remove what they deem unfamiliar, or unfit to be reported in a global perspective. The people who edit here do try to stick to the international notation. There are also subpages for regional news items. Corvus cornix 17:36, June 12, 2007 (UTC)

Emily kills Big Brother UK for racism

This seems to be a pretty big story in the headlines, especially in the UK. Have been on the front page of most of the tabloids this week: http://newsvote.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6729673.stm

It may be more suitable for Portals: Current events/English and Irish. Corvus cornix 17:38, June 12, 2007 (UTC)

International Space Station

Much news has been reported about massive computer failures at the International Space Station during the Space Shuttle mission STS-117. I believe Wikipedia and Wikinews should pay attention to this as closely as it is today. This is far from over. Sponge 21:09, June 15, 2007 (UTC)

Edit intro feature enabled

See Wikipedia: Wikipedia Signpost/2007-06-18/Technology Report and Bug 5175. This mentions this page as an example. Can anyone apply this to show how it works? Carcharoth 12:17, June 19, 2007 (UTC)

I decided to give it a try, using "& amp; editintro = test". This gives the page test as intro text before the edit box. - Chacor 12:32, June 19, 2007 (UTC)
This feature exists for input boxes (see m: Help: Input Boxes) and for links to edit pages. For example, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Sandbox&action=edit is a link to edit Sandbox; http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Sandbox&action=edit&editintro=Main_Page is a link to edit the Sandbox with the Main Page displayed before the edit box. So far, I've used the feature on the 'click here to edit' links in the Help Desk and on my own User Talk page. --ais523 16:20, June 19, 2007 (UTC)
Ah. So this works only for manually created edit links. Those who click on "edit this page" will still get a normal edit window, and there's no way to get an ordinary introductory HTML comment (like the one in Portal: Current Events) appears as an introduction to those who click on "edit this page"? That's all I read about bug reports and discussions as providing. Carcharoth
Specifically, quote from here: "This request is to enable editintro features for existing pages. Many pages on Wikipedia, such as Current events, include fairly long HTML comments at the top to instruct newcomers on how to edit page correctly. This feature will eliminate the need for such long comments and allow to include wikilinks in the instructions. "Carcharoth 17:33, June 19, 2007 (UTC)
The current implementation, in the Inputbox extension, expects the page to be edited via a link or button click rather than through this edit-page button. To add editintro for any edits to the page will require either JS site changes to add links or changes in the software. --ais523 09:50, June 22, 2007 (UTC)

I have implemented this feature here; instructions are in Portal: Current events/Instructions for editing. I have fully protected the page, but maybe it's not necessary and can be downgraded to semi-protection. I will leave it for others to decide. - tariq abjotu 02:59, June 25, 2007 (UTC)

Leadership Change

I recommend the new sidebar header - Change Leadership

It will be different from the Election and will deal with the actual changes in the Leadership of a country (or organization). For example, Britain is currently undergoing a change of leadership in the Prime Minister. France and Israel recently underwent a change of leadership in the President's office. It could also include a change of leadership (or regime) in the Gaza Strip (in the de facto sense).

Ongoing will be the period when a new leader has been chosen or appointed but not yet taken office.
Last will be where the leadership change has been completed in the last month.
The Future will be a situation where we know that leadership changes will happen, but we do not know who it is yet. (eg US will have a leadership change on January 21, 2009)

Current events in Hong Kong

I have never been involved in this Portal, and I am not familiar with the standards here. I have maintained current events in Hong Kong for a while now, and basically this is a one-man job. So I kept the format simple and easy for myself. I personally read The Standard online regularly, and I just add an important news item to the page. My question is, does this Portal have space for the current events page in Hong Kong to be integrated into it? If so, will it get space in Portal: Current events/News Browser? Press TV

Can a Press TV story be included here? I connected one today and it was deleted by User: Perspicacite [5] (which then left an angry message on my conversation page [6]). Press TV is a new English-language TV news station run by the government. Thereby joining the ranks of BBC News 24, France 24 and other government news stations. Perspicacite seems to believe that because the government in question is Iran, we can not refer to it. Is this true?... Seabhcan 21:06, July 11, 2007 (UTC)

I will assume this [7] is an honest mistake â € <â €
Your edits to the current event page are bordered by vandalism. Perspicacite 21:13, July 11, 2007 (UTC)
If you've read an article on Press TV before deleting it, you'll see that it's only funded by the government, and not run by them. This is the exact same model as used by the BBC. Your criticism is unfounded. mms://217.218.67.244/presslive is a link to watch TV Press if you want to learn it. --Vitalmove 23:30, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

For future reference, Press TV and IRNA are not a trusted source. CNN, whether you like it or not [8], is. Perspicacite 21:22, July 11, 2007 (UTC)

Why is Press TV unreliable, but BBC and France 24 are? All run by the government.... Seabhcan 21:25, July 11, 2007 (UTC)
Uh, no. The BBC and France 24 were funded in part by the British and French governments. None of them are run by their respective governments. The BBC does not accept orders from PM Brown. Perspicacite 21:29, July 11, 2007 (UTC)
And why do you think Press TV does not? Furthermore, I have seen the Chinese CCTV referenced here before. The Chinese press is much more controlled than Iran. Russian media sources are also frequently quoted... Seabhcan 21:30, July 11, 2007 (UTC)
Did you ask me why I thought Press TV was run country? That's general knowledge. [9] Perspicacite 21:35, July 11, 2007 (UTC)

Seabhcan, I would like to point out that the site you linked to (http://www.mebusa.org/presstv.html) is not a web page connected to the event described in your edit. - Zntrip 22:05, July 11, 2007 (UTC)

It appears that this destroyer [10] changed the link.... Seabhcan 22:09, July 11, 2007 (UTC)
In this case, I would also like to say that the information is relevant. It has been reported by another source (here, the source is Stratfor). - Zntrip 22:32, July 11, 2007 (UTC)
Do you have a source that does not require membership? Perspicacite 22:46, July 11, 2007 (UTC)

Wherever the news is discussed is Iran's problem, PressTV may be a reliable source. For other world news, I would rather see a more independent source than PressTV. And it should be the opinion of the Iranian if you ask me. Most importantly, the things referred to here so far by PressTV are by no means world news. They are excerpts from Iranian government officials who play poker with the rest of the world. Not at all interesting, and childish like a bully in the schoolyard. --TheDJ (talk o contribs) 23:06, July 11, 2007 (UTC)

If anyone wants to see Press TV, type this link mms://217.218.67.244/presslive to the internet explorer. I think Press TV will have a tough battle to get fair treatment on Wikipedia, based on the strong presence of editors that some of the suspects employed by Israel. However, I think this is unfair. Because anyone watching Press TV will see, it seems to offer credible news, not only in Iran but in the world at large. The two events I love are "The American Dream" hosted by Mark Levine in the United States and "Between the Headlines" hosted by a charming man in England. I definitely give it a thumbs up. --Vitalmove 23:28, July 11, 2007 (UTC)

Uh... okay thanks for that. Just the artillce I mean is called "Iraq: Pejak Leader Directs From Germany". Just search and should be displayed without login. - Zntrip 23:30, July 11, 2007 (UTC)
I'm not interested in the article, thank you. I hope the unimportant article is not what you are trying to add to recent events. --Vitalmove 23:32, July 11, 2007 (UTC)
You are very annoying. It is not a reliable source. Al Jazeera is many times more reliable and independent, and will be more welcome as a source of news. --TheDJ (talk o contribs) 23:54, July 11, 2007 (UTC)

Vitalmove, you realize that Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedia and not a place to ramble on about your favorite TV show? I responded to Perspicacite's comments about the links I gave. I did not mention the article just so you can repeat your trivial comments. If you do not have something constructive to contribute to this discussion, I suggest you go, because you are very disturbing. - Zntrip 01:29, July 12, 2007 (UTC)

It's been a week. It has no history as a reliable source for projects such as the encyclopedia. It will be as reliable as a state-owned BBC or a French stattion or turn into a Soviet TASS disaster. --Tbeatty 06:24, July 12, 2007 (UTC)

Disasters are a pretty reckless way to describe 100-year-old and massive and global news agencies. TASS has bureaus in more than 60 countries. http://www.itar-tass.com/eng/--Vitalmove 07:00, July 12, 2007 (UTC)
itar-tass is not the Soviet TASS. --Tbeatty 07:23, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Tbeatty, I want to know why you are here: [11] You replaced Press TV articles with CBS articles, saying that CBS is more reliable. However, both articles say almost exactly the same thing - how can you say that one is more reliable when both are identical?... Seabhcan 09:24, July 12, 2007 (UTC)
Because the channel is a week old, so it does not have a reputation for quality work. Now this PressTV discussion is closed, please use another source, and come back when it's a year old and no longer in Iran. All Iranian news agencies are highly censored and therefore not independent and unacceptable sources. We are not anti-Iranians, we are only anti-bad sources and we apologize if anyone feels offended. --TheDJ (talk o contribs) 09:47, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Ok. So what other sources are prohibited? Can we use CCTV? It's not from Iran, so pass your first test, but it's from a highly censored country? And what about the Russian media? Also, you said above that Press TV might be appropriate for a story about Iran. Is this still standing? The current discussion is about Iranian terrorist groups. Is this not "about Iran" enough? How much "about Iran" should the story so that Press TV can be used?... Seabhcan 10:19, July 12, 2007 (UTC)
CCTV is quite old, but its reliability is also well known. Obviously there is misinformation about many things. And I do not think Russian sources are much better lately. And the thing about "about Iran" still stands, is not that channel WEEK OLD. I do not know how you can think that the source of WEEK OLD is acceptable. I can start my own website and say whatever I want, no one will trust me in the first week. If I have that website and posted there for years, and others are quoting my work and stuff, then my website MAY be a reliable source. That's where this place is. WEEK OLD gives something equally credible with the trash. In addition, the source is never prohibited, it does not correspond to a reliable source. --TheDJ (talk o contribs) 10:31, July 12, 2007 (UTC)
So its age from the key source! Although, I seem to remember people quoting France 24 from the beginning. Perhaps the combination of "Iran" and "New" makes it unreliable? By the way - which point in WP: RS applies to Press TV?... Seabhcan 11:10, July 12, 2007 (UTC)

I have to say that Press TV's website has been around longer than is actually owned by a television station, so every complaint about its age is irrelevant. Indeed, I agree that it should be avoided when trying to source news that the United States-or Israel- (etc.) may be related for obvious reasons - a glance at websites already pointing to anti-US headlines along side. - Chacor 11:19, July 12, 2007 (UTC)

Agree, Just as we should avoid the US and Israeli news media for stories relating to Iran (I remember a 'story' last year in US and Canadian media about Jews in Iran being forced to wearing yellow stars, fully fictitious, and withdrawn after complaints from a Jew member from the Iranian parliament)... Seabhcan 11:46, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Be Careful of Journalists. As a result of my participation in this debate, and my efforts to improve Press TV articles, User: Perspicacite has (1) tried to ban me by damaging the article, and accused me of 3RR for returning vandalism, (2) following my editing history and targeting my other articles, such as Mark Levine (journalist) [12]] and failing in that endeavor now (3) threatening to get me banned forever because of "uncivilized". At this point I feel lurking, and although I am happy my identity is protected, I am still a bit chilled by his behavior. Watch Out. --Vitalmove 07:13, July 13, 2007 (UTC)
