Korean dramas started broadcasting in the Philippines since 2003, beginning with GMA Network airing Bright Girl.

Most media broadcasters in the Philippines airing Korean dramas are ABS-CBN (with its current sister channel Jeepney TV and Cine Mo!), GMA Network (with its current sister channel GMA News TV), TV5, as well as minor TV networks Net 25, government channel PTV, among others. All Korean dramas go through the process of localization: re-dubbing, pre-editing, post-editing and finalization before going on-air.

History

Korean dramas began airing in the Philippines in 2003, with shows such as Bright Girl, Autumn in My Heart, Lovers in Paris and My Girl.

Popularity

Korean dramas have become hits since the 2000s, excluding Japanese dramas. The huge demand from viewers for Asian dramas has prompted Philippine TV stations to import Korean, Taiwanese and Chinese dramas. Top Korean drama series Lovers in Paris, Full House, My Name Is Kim Sam Soon, Stairway to Heaven and Coffee Prince were imported and dubbed in Filipino language, instantly becoming hits. The success of Jewel in the Palace in Korea was also replicated in the Philippines and many other Asian countries. In the recent years, Korean dramas continues to prove that Japanese animation is "dead" in Philippine television.

The Taiwanese drama Meteor Garden was also a ratings success when it first aired in 2003. Its remake, the Korean Boys Over Flowers, starring Lee Min Ho, Kim Hyun Joong, Kim Bum, Kim Joon, Kim So Eun and Koo Hye Sun, also succeeded in capturing audiences. It was aired in the Philippines on ABS-CBN from May to August 2009 and became a phenomenal success.

TV5, the third largest network in the country, aired Korean dramas such as Hero, My Wife is a Superwoman, and the Taiwanese drama Easy Fortune Happy Life, together with the Israeli drama Split, and the variety show Willing Willie hosted by Willie Revillame. However, a TV5 representative said that instead of putting all their own Korean dramas in primetime, they've decided to move it on noontime: "It's actually the strategy of TV5 to do counter-programming. When everyone else is going high-energy with noontime shows, here we are offering the best titles of Koreanovelas on noontime. It's like it will be our primetime. We want to provide an alternative."

As of 2014, the Philippine government channel PTV had begun airing Korean dramas, starting with Oh Ja Ryong is Coming.

In the past years, ABS-CBN has aired a score of dramas, including Marrying a Millionaire, 101st Proposal, Green Rose, Boys Over Flowers, Lovers in Paris, He's Beautiful, Heartstings, City Hunter, Memories of Bali, Rooftop Prince, Missing You, Princess Hours, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Dream High, My Girl, Fated to Love You, My Lovely Girl When a Man Falls in Love, That Winter, the Wind Blows, The Heirs, Hwarang, Love in the Moonlight, Legend of the Blue Sea, Goblin, Black, and many more.

GMA Network, for its part, has aired a number of Korean dramas, including Full House, All About Eve, My Name Is Kim Sam Soon, Stairway to Heaven, Jewel in the Palace, Autumn in My Heart, Winter Sonata, Shining Inheritance, Temptation of Wife, East of Eden, Queen Seon Deok, Master's Sun, Queen In-hyun's Man, The Princess' Man, Dong Yi, Empress Ki, My Love from the Star, Descendants of the Sun, among others.

While TV5 has aired Hero, My Wife is a Superwoman, Don't Cry My Love, First Wives' Club, High Kick!, High Kick: Through the Roof, High Kick: Revenge of the Short Legged, Likeable or Not, Oh Soo Jung vs Karl, Pink Lipstick, Runaway, Smile, Honey and You Are My Destiny.
