Disabled classification

Each participant in the Paralympics has their disability grouped into one of five defect categories; amputations, conditions may be congenital or sustained by injury or illness; cerebral palsy; wheelchair athletes, there is often overlap between this and other categories; impaired vision, including blindness; Les autres, any physical defect that does not fall strictly under any of the other categories, such as dwarfism or multiple sclerosis. Each Paralympic sport then has its own classification, depending on the particular physical demands of the competition. Events are coded, made of numbers and letters, describing the event type and classification of competing athletes. Some sports, such as athletics, divide athletes by category and severity of their disability, other sports, such as swimming, group competitors from different categories together, the only separation based on the severity of disability.
