Cosmos: A Space Odyssey is the American television documentary series 2014. This event is a follow-up to the 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage , presented by Carl Sagan on Public Broadcasting Service and is considered a milestone for scientific documentary film. This series was developed to bring back the foundations of science to the television network on top of television series and other scientific-based films. The show was presented by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who, as a high school student, was inspired by Sagan. Among the executive producers was Seth MacFarlane, whose financial investment was instrumental in bringing the show to television broadcasting, and Ann Druyan, a co-author and co-creator of the original television series and Sagan's wife. The show was produced by Brannon Braga, and Alan Silvestri compiled a support score.

The series loosely follows the same thirteen-episode format and storytelling approach used by the original Cosmos , including elements such as "Imagination Ship" and "Cosmic Calendar", but the feature information updated since the 1980 series, along with computer-generated graphics and extensive animations add to the narration.

The series airs on March 9, 2014, simultaneously in the United States on ten 21st Century Fox networks. The rest of the series airs on the Fox Network, with National Geographic Channel re-broadcasting the next night's episode with additional content. The series has been re-broadcast internationally in dozens of other countries by local National Geographic and Fox stations.

The series was concluded on June 8, 2014, with a home media release of the entire series on June 10, 2014. Cosmos has been critically acclaimed, winning several television broadcast awards and Peabody Awards for educational content. On January 13, 2018, it was announced that another season entitled Cosmos: Possible Worlds will air in 2019 on Fox and National Geographic channels.

The original section 13 Cosmos: A Personal Voyage first aired in 1980 at the Public Broadcasting Service, and hosted by Carl Sagan. This show is considered to be very significant since broadcast; David Itzkoff of The New York Times described it as "a decisive moment for science-themed television programming." This event has been watched by at least 400 million people in 60 different countries, and until 1990 the documentary film The Civil War , remains the highest rated network program.

Following Sagan's death in 1996, widow Ann Druyan, co-creator of the original series Cosmos along with Steven Soter, and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson attempted to create a new version of the series, which aims to appeal. to the extent possible and not just for those interested in science. They have struggled for years with reluctant television networks that fail to see the broad appeal of the show.

Development

Seth MacFarlane has met Druyan through Tyson at the 2008 kickoff event for Science & The Entertainment Exchange, the new office of the Los Angeles National Academy of Sciences, designed to connect Hollywood writers and directors with scientists. A year later, at a 2009 lunch in New York City with Tyson, MacFarlane learned of their interest in re-creating Cosmos . He was influenced by Cosmos as a child, believing that Cosmos was presented for "bridging the gap between the academic community and the general public". At that time, MacFarlane told Tyson, "I'm at the point in my career where I have a spendable income... and I want to spend it on something valuable." MacFarlane has considered a reduction in efforts for space travel in recent decades to become part of our "languid culture". MacFarlane, which has several series on the Fox network, was able to bring Druyan to meet head of Fox programming, Peter Rice and Kevin Reilly, and help secure greenlighting from the show. MacFarlane recognizes that he is "the least important person in this equation" and his business is a departure from the work he did before, but considers this a "very comfortable area for me personally". He and Druyan have become close friends, and Druyan states that he believes that Sagan and MacFarlane will be "the same spirit" with their respective "protean talents". In June 2012, MacFarlane provided funds to allow about 800 Sagan personal note boxes and correspondence to donate to the Library of Congress.

In a Tyson Point of Inquiry interview, Tyson discussed their goal of capturing the original "Cosmos ," which he described as "an uplifting theme that calls people to action." Druyan describes the magic themes and skepticism they put into the script, in an interview with Skepticity, to be eligible on our show, he must touch you. It still has to be very tight. good science - there is no short cut to it. But then, it should also be part of the same skepticism and wonder both. "In Big Picture Science's interview, Tyson praised the success of the original series for the proliferation of science programming," The task for the next generation of Cosmos is a bit different because I do not have to teach you a science textbook. There's a lot of science in the original textbook Cosmos , but that's not what you remember best. What most people remember best remembered by the original series is an attempt to present science in ways that have meaning to you that can affect your behavior as a citizen and the world - especially the world. "Tyson stated that this new series will contain new material and an updated version of the topic in the original series, but mainly, it will serve" the needs of the current population. "" We want to create a program that is not only the first sequel, the moment in which we make it, so it is important for those present in the 21st century. "Tyson considers that recent successes from science-oriented shows such as Big Bang Theory and CSI: The crime scene investigation, along with films like Gravity , shows that "science has become mainstream" and expects Cosmos "to land on fertile soil".

Tyson talked about the "love-hate relationship" relationship the viewer had with the original "Spaceship of the Imagination" series, but was confirmed during production that they were developing "storytelling vehicles". Tyson asserts that defining elements of the original series, such as Spaceship of the Imagination and Cosmic Calendar with enhanced special effects, as well as new elements, will be present. Animations for this sequence were finally created by the team selected by MacFarlane for this series. Kara Vallow develops and produces animations, and the animation studio used is Six Point Harness in Los Angeles, California. The voice of Spaceship of the Imagination, and the sound design in general, was created by Rick Steele, who said about the show: "Cosmos has, by far, been the most challenging performance of my career." The updated spacecraft is designed to "remain timeless and very simple", according to MacFarlane, using the ceiling to project future events and floors for them in the past, to allow Tyson, as host, to "bring [viewer] to places he's talking about ".

The Catholic League is disappointed that science shows "applying" Catholicism. A League spokesman notes how the event focuses on Giordano Bruno, whose Catholic Church is handed over to secular authorities to be burned at stake because of religious defamation, immoral behavior, and heresy in the matter of dogmatic theology, in addition to some of its philosophical and cosmological doctrines, and stated that the event "skipped Copernicus and Galileo - two people far more influential in proving and disseminating the heliocentric theory - because in their case, the role of the Church is much more complicated."
