The River Current River is formed in the southeastern part of the Ozarks of Missouri and becomes the 7th order stream as it flows southeast from the Ozarks to northeastern Arkansas where it becomes a tributary of the Black River, which is a tributary of White River, a tributary of the Mississippi River. The Stream River is about 184 miles (296 km) long and flows approximately 2,641 square miles (6,840 km 2 ) mostly in Missouri and a small part of the land in northeastern Arkansas. The Upper River Basin is almost 900 feet (270 m) above sea level, while the river mouth is located about 280 feet (85 m) above sea level. The basin flows in rural areas dominated by karst topography, based on dolomite and sandstone base rocks with a small section of igneous rocks southeast of Eminence, Missouri. The average daily flow of a river near Doniphan, Missouri is 2,815 cubic feet (79.7 m 3 ) per second. In 1964, more than 134 mi (160 km) of the river and its tributaries were federally protected as the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, the first national park in America to protect the river system.

Sources and streams
The River Flow begins at Montauk State Park located in the southwest corner of Dent County in southeast Missouri. The Pigeon River and Montauk Springs encounters form a river. Montauk springs make the most of a consistent stream flow, providing ideal conditions for trout fishing. After leaving Montauk State Park, the river enters the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. The top part of the river was torrential with many riffles damaged by deep deep water pools, further down the riffles continued but further apart. Hardwood trees, stone balustrades, caves, springs, pebbles, and dolomite cliffs loomed on the banks of the river. Welch Spring, its first large spring, enters a river about 14 miles (23 km) downstream from upstream, almost doubling the flow of the river. Other renowned springs to add to the river include Spring Cave, Pulltite Spring, and Round Spring. Downstream from upstream about 52 miles (84 km) The Stream River receives its largest tributary of Jacks Fork from the west near the small town of Eminence, Missouri. Blue Spring, another first magnitude springs, empties into the river, 9 miles (14 km) downstream from a meeting with Jacks Fork. The River Flow is about 86 miles (138 km) long when it passes through the town of Van Buren and under US Route 60. South Van Buren several miles of River Flow receives the second largest tributary, the largest spring in the Ozarks and one of the largest known spring outlets in this world. Big Spring boils down to the river providing nearly 470 cubic feet (13 m 3 ) water per second. From Big Spring, the river continues to the southeast leaving the Ozark National Scenic Riverways 105 miles (169 km) from the upper stream. The river then flows through the Mark Twain National Forest until it reaches Doniphan, Missouri and passes under the US 160 Route. From here the river slows as it exits the Ozark Highlands, the river continues its mud-laden journey to Arkansas where it receives the Black River Small. from the northeast before joining the Black River near Pocahontas, Arkansas.

Recreational activities
Canoeing, fishing, horse riding, and camping are very popular activities along the River Stream. The river is quite gentle and is considered to have most of the 1st grade rapids and some grades are rated 2.
Some places of interest along the river include Montauk State Park, Welch Spring and leave the hospital, Aker Ferry, Cave Spring, Devil's Well, Deer Leap, Rock House Cave, Pulltite Spring, Round Spring, Jacks Fork, Blue Spring, Rocky Falls (in the creeks), and Big Spring.
