History
NCHL was founded in 2001, as a result of a national summit on health leadership funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which identifies the need for greater emphasis in the health sector on adopting organizational leadership development practices. During the early years, NCHL supported the Advanced Leadership Development Program for health care executives, and developed a validated Model of National Health Leadership Competence Model. in collaboration with Hay Group. NCHL also established an invitation symposium and a national leadership award dinner, held every November in Chicago.
In mid-2000, NCHL, in collaboration with the ACEHSA accreditation body, supported the evolution of health management education graduates from a knowledge-based approach to a competency-based approach. In 2007, competency-based education has become an established part of the accreditation process, and further expanded in the revision of the 2013 accreditation guidelines.
In the spring of 2011, NCHL developed a joint operating agreement with Rush University Medical Center and Griffith Leadership Center from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. The agreement was pursued in recognition of the changing needs of health leadership development related to the implementation of Patient Protection and the Affordable Care Act.
In 2013, the NCHL program is expanded to include US Cooperatives for the International Patient Program, an organizational membership program with a mission to expand global access to US expertise in high-quality health care. In 2014, the NCHL established a coordinated improvement effort for administrative scholarships, the National Council for Fellowships Administration. Members include hospitals and health systems that sponsor these post-graduate scholarships, as well as accredited graduate health management programs with a focus on preparing students for careers in the health management profession.

Current activity
The NCHL program is supported primarily through contributions donated by members of the organization. Participants in the NCHL program, called Councils, vary by specific program, but generally involve leaders who are responsible for specific leadership activities within their own health system or university. Participants identify and prioritize areas where support from NCHL can help pursue improvements collaboratively.
In addition to the Board, NCHL maintains a validated model of interprofessional healthcare leadership competence, available for the field through their website. NCHL also operates a reward program that recognizes health systems for the use of evidence-based practices in leadership development. The surveys used by the program receive updates based on research that appears in the science of leadership development. Data generated by survey takers have been used to assess the relationship between leadership development practices and specific health system outcomes such as financial performance and patient experience.
