History Edit

Swift Current's history begins with Swift Current Creek originating from Cypress Hills and crosses 100 miles (160 km) of grassland and empties into the South Saskatchewan River. It was the camp for the First Nation for centuries. The name of the river comes from Cree, called the South Saskatchewan River KisiskÃÆ' Â ¢ ciwan, which means "flowing fast". Fur traders found tributaries in their western path in the 1800s, and called them "riviÃÆ'¨re au Courant" (lit: "stream river"). Henri Julien, an artist traveling on a Northwest Coast Police Expedition in 1874, called it "Du Courant", and Commissioner George French used "Strong Current Creek" in his diary. While it takes another decade before it is officially registered, this area is always known as "Swift Current".

The Swift Current Settlement was established in 1883, after CPR surveyed the railway line as far as Swift Current Creek. In 1882, the initial preparation and preparation of the path began, with the first settlers arriving in the spring of 1883. During the early part of his settlement, the economy was based almost exclusively to serve railroad buildings and new employees. There are also significant farm operations known as "76" farms. This includes 10 farms raising sheep and cattle and stretching from Swift Current to Calgary. The farm located in Swift Current deals with sheep. At one point there were over 20,000 sheep grazing on kinetic ground today. The head of the shepherd is John Oman, originally from Scotland. He donated the land to build the Oman School in 1913. Other early industries included collecting bison bone for use in the manufacture of fertilizer, bone china manufacture and sugar refining. The inhabitants also ran a successful Red Cow basket transport business to Battleford until the late 1880s. During the Riel Rebellion of 1885, the Swift Current became the main military base and army deployment area due to its proximity to Battleford but this was only for a short time. On February 4, 1904, the village became a village and then a town on March 15, 1907, when the census showed a population of 550. Swift Current became incorporated as a city on January 15, 1914, with Frank E. West becoming mayor at the time.

Swift Current Airport was taken over by the Swift Current city of Transport Canada in 1996. Airport services were subsequently contracted out. There is a recent (2005-2006) plan to expand and revitalize the airport with rural municipalities around the Swift Current.

Swift Current is sometimes known as "Speedy Creek", "Swift", or "Swifty".

The official slogan of Swift Current is "Where Life Makes Sense".
