International Mister Leather (IML) is an international, even though largely American, conference and leather contest held annually in May since 1979 in Chicago, Illinois.

The Mister Leather International Conference is a multi-day event and an activity to recognize the International Mister Leather . Common interest events, such as speakers, social events, dance parties and the leather market are part of the way competitors are known by committee and evaluating fans, including the BDSM community, can share experiences.

IML is an internationally recognized distinction with an informal relationship with how the contestant qualifies: contestant must be the winner of the lower-level feeder competition of a bar, local or regional skin contests or sponsored by bars, businesses, clubs or organizations dealing with the skin. [2]

The pioneer of this competition is the 1970 "Gold Coast" bar contest held at the Gold Coast leaf bar in Chicago, owned by Chuck Renslow and his partner, Dom Orejudos. The "Mr. Gold Coast" contest became one of the most popular promotions in the bar that led to the need to put the competition to a bigger place (1979), and the title change to International Mr. Leather. [3] The Young International Young Bootblack Competition was added (1993) to the IML program.

The Leather Archives and Museum has put IML in trust (May 2009) with the benefit of events for museums. [4]

IML establishes (July 2009) a policy that IML Leather Market participation will exclude "any entity that promotes barebacking or distributes/sells any item that tends to promote or advocate barebacking." [5]

In 2010 IML was elected into the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame.

In 2018, IML was appointed Hall of Fame Leather (https://leatherhalloffame.com/) during the 2018 Cleveland Leather Weekend (https://www.clawinfo.org/home/).

Criteria for the contest IML

The preliminary round

Contest finalists are selected as follows:

  1. Initial interviews with each of the nine judges, up to 8 minutes, are held in person (60% of the initial value).
  2. The presence and personality of the stage at the "Pecs and Personality" event Saturday (40% of the initial value).

The highest and lowest score of judges for each contestant in each criterion is dropped, and the remaining seven participant scores are calculated to determine 20 contestants with the highest combined score to continue as finalists at the Sunday IML contest event. The only time that a dropped score is included in a count is when there is a tie for 20th place; the contestant concerned has a declining score included in the count but if the deadlock continues then each of the nine judges must choose only one of the two contestants. The initial scoring score is not brought forward. There are also two master counts. [6]

Last round

Each of the 20 finalists is rated on the Sunday IML contest on a scale from 0 to 100 in the following order:

  1. Image of the skin (up to 40 points).
  2. Presentation skills that include contestant speech (up to 40 points).
  3. Physical view (up to 20 points).

The highest and lowest scores for each finalist were dropped, the remaining seven scores added together, and the top three scores named second runner-up, first runner-up, and winner, Mr. International. Leather. A tie for the title is completed by adding a falling score count of two contestants; if the deadlock continues then each of the nine judges must choose only one of the contestants concerned.

Mister International Bootblack Competition

The International Mister Bootblack (IMrBB) Competition runs throughout IML weekend. Contestants are given a location in the IML Leather Market where they do bootblacking services. The holders of weekend ticket packages (as well as juries, contestants, and vendors) are each provided with a redeemable bootblack ballot for one shine by a voter selection bootblack. Bootblack is free to polish any shoe, regardless of whether the person has a ballot, although it is clear that the ballot papers are the means that will determine the winner. Tipping is not necessary, but it is quite common.

The bootblack contest works during Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of IML during the time of the Open Skin Market, a total of about 20 hours for three days. In previous years, boots were allowed to shine boots and collect tickets at any time during the weekend. Since 2001, the bootblack contestants have made deals with the men at the beginning of the week that they will not shine boots or receive ballot papers except during established competition hours. This agreement is structured to give contestants the freedom to take time to enjoy the weekend without feeling the pressure to always be blocking.

In early 1993, the competition was entitled The International Bootblack Competition, and both men and women were allowed to compete. In 1998, it was announced that the competition would be changed to the International Mister Bootblack Competition and that separate competitions for women would be held only at International Ms. Leather. These changes are made mainly because it is generally held that women have significant losses competing for ballots from mostly gay male IML participants, who often base their bootblack selection at least in part on their sexual attraction to boots. Since 1999, competitors for IMrBB are restricted to persons over 21 who can provide a legitimately issued government identification form that identifies them as men.

Winner of the International Competition Bootblack was announced (along with the first and second runner-ups and winners of the Brotherhood Award, where IMrBB's competitors voted and were roughly the same as the Miss Congeniality Award from traditional beauty contests) in the Sunday contest, shortly after the announcement of the top 20 finalists IML.

In recent years, largely due to the coordination of the contest by David Hawks, International Mr. Bootblack 2000, Bootblack Competition has begun to develop additional activities. An IMRBB party was held in the hotel's function room on Saturday night, offering food, music and silent auctions, which proceeded to the winner's trip. Likewise, during the competition hours at Pasar Kulit, volunteers set up tables to answer questions and sell the IMRBB Travel Fund pin, which also adds travel funds. These sources of income have provided various rights holders with more money to help them travel to distant events during their degree years. Money is controlled by the contest coordinator, and any access to funds must be accompanied by evidence of travel expenses. [11]

Starting in 2013, the IMrBB contest has implemented a scoring system to select the winners. Contestants will be evaluated by a panel of judges on the basis of their technical skills, how they perform on stage and in public and what they say in interviews with judges. Votes still produce a percentage of the total score of the contestant. [12]
