Mountain Time Zone in North America saves time by subtracting seven hours from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) when standard time applies, and by reducing six hours during daylight saving time (UTC-6). Clock time in this zone is based on the average solar time in the 105 meridian west of the Greenwich Observatory. In the United States, the exact specifications for the location of time zones and the dividing line between zones are set out in the Code of Federal Regulations at 49 CFR 71.
In the United States and Canada, this time zone is generally called Mountain Time ( MT ). Specifically, this is the Mountain Standard Time ( MST ) when observing the default time, and Mountain Seasons Time ( MDT ) when observing summer time. The term refers to how the Rocky Mountains, which range from northwest Canada to the state of New Mexico, USA, are almost entirely in the time zone. In Mexico, this time zone is known as PacÃÆ'fico Zone ( Pacific Zone ). In the US and Canada, the Mountain Time Zone lies to the east of the Pacific Time Zone and to the west of the Central Time Zone.
In some areas, starting in 2007, local time changed from MST to MDT at 2 Ã, am MST to 3 Ã, am MDT on the second Sunday in March and back on 2 Ã, am MDT to 1 Ã, being MST on the first Sunday in November.
Sonora in Mexico and most of Arizona in the United States do not observe summer time, and during spring, summer, and fall, they are at the same time as Pacific Rim Time. The Navajo Nation, mostly located in Arizona, observed the DST, although the Hopi Nation, as well as some Arizona state offices incorporated in the Navajo Nation, did not.
The largest city in Mountain Time Zone is Phoenix, Arizona. The metropolitan area of ââPhoenix is ââthe largest metropolitan area in the zone; the next largest metropolitan area observing Mountain Time is Denver, followed by nearby El Paso-JuÃÆ'árez area. TV broadcasts in the Mountain Time Zone are usually recorded for one hour, thus indicating broadcast time from the Middle Time Zone (i.e. prime time starts at 7 pm, MT follows the same program sequence as the Middle Zone).
