Mudslides or mud bursts occur when rocks, sand and soil slack and fall from hills and mountains due to earthquakes, rain or snow. In Japan, more than two-thirds of the land is mountainous and therefore vulnerable to landslides.

On September 14, 1984, the Otaki earthquake (magnitude 6.8) in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, caused a major mud eruption in the southern face of Mount Ontake, which reached a speed of 80 ~ 100 km/h.
