World News Now (or WNN ) is an American television news program broadcast on ABC. Aired during the morning hours every Monday through Friday, the program features a mix of common news and off-beat stories, along with weather forecasts, sporting highlights, feature segments, and reurposed segments and story packages from other ABC News programs; His tone is often light, disrespectful and funny.

Created by original executive producer David Bohrman, a number of well-known news personalities have anchored at WNN early in their careers, including the original anchors of Aaron Brown and Lisa McRee, Thalia Assuras, Kevin Newman, Alison Stewart, Liz Cho, Anderson Cooper and the World News Night carrier right now, David Muir. On April 4, 2016, the program was mainly embedded by Kendis Gibson and Diane Macedo, who also became an anchor in the morning morning news program on America This Morning.

WNN is divided into four block segments ("A", "B" "C" and "D") that begin with national and international headlines that combine several pre-recorded reports (with multiple live covers) from ABC NewsOne correspondent or recurrent reports from the ABC World News Tonight network news program . The "A" -block also features a national weather forecast (significant weather stories are also reported during the broadcast through an analysis of meteorologists working with AccuWeather, who provide estimates for stations operated and owned by ABC) and the often funny "kicker" story which ended the block. The blocks "B," "C" and "D" usually feature a mixture of stories from Nightline or BBC, or other live-to-tape or pra-taped segments produced in the studio, depending on Sunday.

Histori

1991-1993

In late 1991 and early 1992 ABC, CBS and NBC each created their own nightly news programs (with ABC programs that compete with the last two networks' Up to Minute and Nightside i>, respectively, both replacing more formatted news/interview programs) to compete for viewer requests initially driven by the 24-hour CNN Gulf War coverage, and to supply local affiliates with the program overnight. Until the making of these news programs, the stations owned and operated by affiliates of the three networks generally fill overnight time with syndicated films and/or programs, while others just sign the broadcast that night. The original title for this program is World News Overnight ; ABC News Executive chose to rename the program World News Now before the first broadcast.

The program debuted on January 6, 1992, with Aaron Brown and Lisa McRee as the original anchors. Later that year, the production staff of World News Now took over the production responsibility for the early morning news program of the World News This Morning network, with both programs sharing staff anchors as a result. After McRee's return from World News Now in January 1993 (then Brown docked together until he joined in May of that year by Thalia Assuras, who eventually became the longest program host until his departure from ABC for CBS News in 1998), the program will begin to experience significant turnover with anchor staff that continues to this day.

In the tradition of NBC News Overnight ( original competitor), World News Now has featured serious and unusual news stories interspersed with strange features such as "World News Polka" (played by comedian Barry Mitchell on accordion), camel camcorders dancing on Wednesday (for "Hump Day"), and laughter coming from outside the camera. Weather predictions are made for vague and exotic places around the world; some locals have various relationships with the show, while some have pop culture significance, including Cicely, Alaska and Twin Peaks, Washington.

The program also often repeats the story packages from other ABC News programs like Nightline and World News Tonight . It has become a clear training ground for new news readers (see list below) that eventually goes to higher profile positions with local networks or affiliates. The event is also unique to the interactive segment, some of which pioneered the commonly used email communications on today's television news broadcasts. ABC News Board WNN has offered audience questions and comments from the anchor itself, during the show.

1994-1998

On November 23, 1995, World News Now became the first television program broadcast live on the Internet, using the CU-SeeMe interface. Victor Dorff, producer of WNN at the time, arranged for the show to be broadcast on the internet every day for a six-month trial period. CU-SeeMe is also used in recorded interview segments where Kevin Newman anchor and director and founder of Global Schoolhouse, Yvonne Marie Andres discuss the future of computers in communication.

World News Now is used as a prototype for Fred , ABC's plan to operate a cable news channel. The plan was filed by network management in 1995 and then fell within a few years due to problems with cable trains, including competition with MSNBC and Fox News Channel which was recently launched.

In the fall of 1998, ABC News entered into labor disputes, resulting in support employees locked out of the news division headquarters for several months. While World News This Morning continues to be produced in New York City with replacement production staff, production of World News Now is transferred to the London division news agency. Mark Mullen was again the newscaster for WNN during the last months of the lockout.

1999-2008

After the CU-SeeMe trial, World News Now then try another webcast; between 1999 and 2001, the program was broadcast live for free on the ABC News website. In 2005, the rear-screen webcast was free again. Among the broadcast anchors during this period was David Muir, who eventually became the anchor of the news magazine 20/20 and became the anchor of the weekly edition of World News Tonight in August 2014, which participated World News Now from July 2003 to August 2004 (originally with Andrea Stassou and later with Tamala Edwards).

On June 8, 2006, ABC White House Correspondent Martha Raddatz noticed the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi terrorist near Baqubah, Iraq. After tip confirmation, ABC made a special report at 2:38 am Eastern Time, led by WNN anchor Ron Corning and Taina Hernandez. The performances, usually repeated on tape after the initial broadcast, were aired in all time zones and entered into the morning news program World News This Morning . On-air and behind-the-scenes staff remain on-air until Good Morning America starts and takes over story coverage at 7:00 am Eastern Time.

In January 2007, World News Now celebrated its 15th anniversary, with a brief resurgence of the National Temperature Index (see below) and a new version of "World News Polka". On 2 August 2007, WNN abandoned its normal format and conducted an almost continuous coverage of the collapse of the Mississippi I-35W River bridge that occurred in Minneapolis a day earlier; the scope of this program is anchored by HernÃÆ'¡ndez and Stephanie Sy, and continues to America. This Morning.

Taina Hernandez left the show on December 18, 2007, to spend more time with his children, while Ryan Owens announced on February 29, 2008, that he would leave the show to become a full-time correspondent for ABC News. During the week of January 7, 2008, WNN celebrated its 16th anniversary in the air with a retrospective segment in the early days of its broadcast and anchor. Jeremy Hubbard was named the co-anchor of World News Now on March 17, 2008, with Vinita Nair named as co-anchor Hubbard on 17 September of that year.

2009-2011

On September 22, 2009, World News Now became the first news broadcast of the night network to launch broadcasts in high definition.

On July 9, 2010, Jeremy Hubbard left WNN to become a full-time correspondent for ABC News; he was replaced as Nair's colleagues on the program by Rob Nelson. In honor of Hubbard, the staff of World News Now is looking back on time with the program and like a tradition when a reader leaves the show, Hubbard has a picture of his resemblance raised to the ABC News kafade. There was also a polka, sung for Hubbard's dog, Jake, and Jeremy received his piece as a present while leaving while also welcoming his successor, Rob Nelson.

On January 24, 2011, World News Now debuted new graphics for all segments of the program and started using the new device, the side view of the existing ABC World News set. On February 17 of that year, Nair announced that he would leave as a newscaster of World News Now after the broadcast the following night; the February 18 edition paid homage to Nair in each of his three segments, including appearances from former and former colleagues including Jeremy Hubbard. His legacy is to treat the crew to a hot breakfast on his last day. A brief introduction by Nelson to Nair is also given to the conclusion of America This Morning . The correspondent of Peggy Bunker (then former anchor at Fox KDVR affiliate, where Jeremy Hubbard happens to be working now) is named as a temporary successor.

On March 11, 2011, the program provided live coverage (in all time zones) of the devastating T-hoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, featuring updates and images from NHK World; coverage continues for America and Morning America and Good Morning America. On July 21, 2011, Bunker announced that he would leave World News Now after the July 22 broadcast, which acknowledged his departure at the first and last of the three half hour segments during the following night.. In addition, a brief delivery by Nelson to Bunker (who later became a morning and afternoon reader at the ABC COMO-TV affiliate Seattle) was awarded at the conclusion of America This Morning .

Starting on July 25, 2011, ABC News correspondents Tanya Rivero, Diana Alvear and Linsey Davis began rotating as co-anchors with Nelson until a sponsor was named; this went on until Rivero was named the sole partner of the program on September 19, 2011. On October 14, 2011, Rivero shifted to correspondent roles on ABC's daytime news program and was replaced by correspondent Yunji De Nies as a replacement anchor that started the next day. On October 27, 2011, Paula Faris was crowned as the bearer of the news World News Now , taking over the role on January 2, 2012.

2012-present

On January 6, 2012, the program celebrates its 20th anniversary. Clips and censors of the first two decades WNN were displayed throughout the broadcast that night. On June 11, 2012, the old "morning newspaper" segment was replaced by "The Mix," which instead featured headlines from various national and international newspapers, focusing on online trending stories.

On January 18, 2013, Paula Faris announces that she will depart on World News Now after the January 22 broadcast; on the eve of Faris leaving the program, a brief delivery by Nelson to Faris was given to the conclusion of America This Morning . Diana Perez was named as Faris's successor. On March 12, 2013, Rob Nelson announced that he will leave the effective program March 15, 2013 to become a full-time correspondent for ABC News. John Muller is named as a substitute.

Marci Gonzalez fills in for Diana Perez when she gives birth from January 6 to March 26, 2014. Perez then announces on May 29, 2014 that she will leave World News Now to spend time with her family; John Muller and staff celebrated his tenure in all three half-hour segments during the May 30 edition, including visits by former colleague Rob Nelson, who said he was the last of 16 co-anchors he served together on WNN . On June 12, 2014, John Muller announced he was leaving the program to return to his previous company, WPIX New York, to become the main newscaster. In October 2014, T.J. Holmes and Reena Ninan were appointed co-anchors of World News Now and America This Morning. Ninan's appointment became official on April 8, 2015.

Around August 2015, TJ left "World News Now" and "America This Morning" to focus on his contribution to other events on the network. He "suddenly" left the show around August 7, 2015. Kendall Gibson has since served as co-anchor of the show.

On April 4, 2016, Reena announced he was leaving the show to work during the day. Reena has a special shipment on April 8, 2016 and left the network for anchor position at CBSN, CBS's online streaming news service. Diane Macedo, formerly of Imus in the Morning, took over as co-anchor World News Now, along with Kendis Gibson.

On Friday, January 6, 2017, World News Now broadcast an elaborate 25th Anniversary date. All three and a half hours, except for the summit summaries, are devoted to archiving event clips and mementos by ex-anchors. Predictably rude, WNN creator David Bohrman and original anchor Lisa McRee stayed in the studio to comment on the event's history. Barry Mitchell, the accordion behind him, performs a special 25th anniversary polka ("The work we do is important here, that's what bosses say/We're warming up the cameras for GMA"). For an hour and a half, Bohrman, McRee, and cardboard Aaron Brown joined the anchors of Kendis Gibson and Diane Macedo in the open bar, along with past and present World News Now staff.

The show is produced and aired in three half-hour segments from 1:30 am to 3:00 am Eastern Time every Monday to Friday morning, and is transmitted in a 90-minute delayed circle till 8:00 AM East, when America's Morning started in certain areas of the Pacific Time Zone. America This Morning - which uses the same production and anchor staff as World News Now , even though the program is labeled as a tie-in to GoodMorning America i> airs directly to the network at 4:00 am Eastern Time and also a pending recording for many ABC stations. Most ABC stations do not broadcast the entire WNN loop program and precede parts of programs that support local program display (usually infomercials or syndication programs) - join ongoing programs anywhere from five minutes to as many as two hours after the start of the news broadcast - with affiliates repeating the show until America This Morning airs.

Although most ABC stations clean up World News Now , a small number of affiliates do not broadcast the program:

  • Oklahoma City's KOCO-TV affiliate (also owned by Hearst) has aired this program since its debut; but from November 2010 to September 2012, he postponed Monday's edition of the program to broadcast syndication and infomercial-pre-emption programs resulting from broadcast news broadcasts on the morning of the station to 4:30 in the morning, which resulted in the station encouraging America This Morning in front of an hour and a half (before November 2010, the station aired a twenty-five minute block of Monday edition combined in progress between infomercials and America This Morning). KOCO began broadcasting a full 90-minute block Monday, when it rejoined the schedule in September 2012, as it dropped certain syndicated and infomercial programs from its weekly schedule on Sunday.
  • WAWV in Terre Haute, Indiana (owned by Mission Broadcasting) did not delete World News Now when the station rejoined ABC in September 2011, after 16 years of ABC's ABC over-the-air absence market (it was an ABC affiliate at the time the program debuted, but operated as a Fox affiliate from 1995 to 2011); WAWV must meet existing syndicated programming contracts rather than carrying WNN initially, which also includes a pre-emption of the children's program block on Litton's Weekend Adventure . In the fall of 2013, WAWV started carrying WNN and LWA with the termination of the syndication agreement.
  • WVII-TV in Bangor, Maine precedes a program that supports the broadcast of cable television network Jewelry Television.
  • As of September 2011, three ABC stations owned by Citadel Communications - KCAU-TV in Sioux City, Iowa, KLKN in Lincoln, Nebraska and WOI-DT in Ames, Iowa (Des Moines) - pre-empire World News Now , because they all signed the air for an hour overnight (thus, all three are among the few remaining television stations in the United States that do not operate on a 24 hour schedule). WLNE-TV in New Bedford, Massachusetts (Providence, Rhode Island), acquired by Citadel in April 2011, and before September, is ABC's only Citadel affiliate carrying a 24-hour schedule and cleared World News Now . KCAU and WOI have been sold to Nexstar Media Group.
  • Four small market ABC affiliates - WDAY-TV in Fargo, North Dakota and the WDAZ-TV satellite at Grand Forks, North Dakota, KQTV at St. Joseph, Missouri, and WOAY-TV in Oak Hill, West Virginia (and formerly WSVI-TV in the US Virgin Islands) - also did not delete World News Now when these stations stopped working during the night hours.

Criticism

Occasional anchor Taina Hernandez has been criticized in the national press for laughing during the various segments of the program, some of whom are dealing with serious stories. He laughs at the story of Owen Wilson's attempted suicide in 2007, and he and his co-host Ryan Owens have giggled through the terrorist-centric segment and the Iraq War. This laughing laugh earned him the nickname, "The Laughing Taina."
