f.lux is a cross-platform computer program that adjusts the display color temperature by location and time of day so the eye can rest. The program is designed to reduce eye strain during nighttime use and reduce sleep patterns disorder.

Compatibility

This program is available for Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux. It's also available for iOS devices, though it requires a device to be jailbroken. Apple does not allow apps on its App Store, as the use of the developer tools is limited. Developers briefly host the Xcode project on GitHub, allowing iOS 9 users to sideload apps to their devices, but retract it at Apple's request. After Apple announced a similar functionality, called Night Shift, in iOS 9.3, developers have asked Apple to provide developer tools and to allow their apps to the App Store. A preview version of Android is available.

Function

After installation, users can select locations based on geographical coordinates, zip codes or location names. The program then automatically calibrates the color temperature of the device screen to that day's time, based on sunrise and sunset at the selected location. As the sun sets, it will gradually change the color temperature to a warmer color and restore the original color at sunrise.

Users can choose from various color profiles and predetermined temperature values. They can also modify program behavior for certain programs or activities, including modes for watching movies that reduce red flashes for up to 2.5 hours, and darkroom modes that do not affect night-customized vision. Time can be reversed on f.lux for PC to provide warm daylight (for people working at night). This program can control the lighting of Hue Philips LEDs, so that the color of home lights follows the f.lux setting.

Benefits

supporters f.lux hypothesized that changing the color temperature of a display to reduce the benefits of white-blue light at night would increase the effectiveness of sleep. Reducing exposure to blue light at night has been associated with increased melatonin secretion. Although developers provide a list of relevant research on their websites, the program itself has not been scientifically tested to determine its efficacy. Nevertheless, f.lux has been reviewed extensively and positively by tech journalists, bloggers, and users.
