Religion News Service was founded in 1934 by journalist Louis Minsky as an independent non-profit affiliate of the Christian and Jewish National Conference. The United Methodist Reporter bought RNS in 1983, and in 1994, Newhouse News Service, the main publisher of daily newspapers and magazines, bought it and changed its name to the Religious News Service. RNS is owned by Religion News LLC, a nonprofit company, a limited liability company headed by CEO and publisher Thomas Gallagher, and is based at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Controversy
