Global politics names disciplines that examine the political and economic patterns of the world and the field under study. At the center of the field is a different process of political globalization in relation to the problems of social power.
Discipline studies the relationship between city, nation-state, fractional states, multinational corporations, non-governmental organizations and international organizations. Current discussion areas include national and ethnic conflict regulation, democracy and national self-determination politics, globalization and its relationship to democracy, conflict and peace studies, comparative politics, political economy and the international environmental political economy. An important area of ​​global politics is contestation in the global political realm of legitimacy.
It can be argued that global politics must be distinguished from the field of international politics, which seeks to understand the political relationship between the nation-state, and thus has a narrower scope. Similarly, international relations, which seek to understand the general economic and political relations between the nation-state, are more narrow fields than global politics.

Beginning in the late nineteenth century, some groups expanded the definition of political community outside the nation-state to include many, if not all, of the human race. These "internationalists" include Marxists, human rights advocates, environmental activists, peace activists, feminists, and dalit. This is the general direction of thinking about global politics, although the term is not used as such.
